  • 1699-1724: Rule of Ayuka Khan
  • 1771: Kalmyk Khanate annexed by Russia, many Kalmyks migrate to ancestral lands
  • 1865: Elista, present day capital of Kalmykia, founded
  • 1920: Kalmyk Autonomous Region established
  • 1935: Kalmyk AR elevated to ASSR
  • 1942: Portions of Kalmykia occupied by Germany
  • 1943: Kalmyk ASSR abolished, Kalmyks deported to Siberia
  • 1958: Kalmyks return to Volga region, ASSR restored
  • 1991: End of Soviet Union, Kalmykia becomes part of Russian Federation
  • 1993: First presidential elections held in Kalmykia
